Derung Daughter is a narrative AR experience that immerses users in the world of the Derung women, an indigenous ethnic group in China known for their ancient facial tattoo rituals. Through a 3D face filter, users' faces are transformed with digital patterns inspired by these intricate tattoos, symbols of both identity and defiance. When users open their mouths, they momentarily vanish from view, triggering a voiceover that unveils the hidden story of how these tattoos, seen as marks of beauty, were also acts of resistance—believed to protect the women from outside raiders by making them less desirable. The experience explores women's power, the subversive strength found in perceived "failure," and the feminine interplay between agency and identity, inviting users to engage with a cultural narrative that is both visible and veiled.

It has been selected as the finalist for Queensland XR Festival 2024.
